With Valentines Day on the way, I am reminded of a touching story behind this week’s image, Somethin’s Cookin’ 1 from the Pin-Up Series. Years ago, on the city’s monthly art stroll, there was a couple that came into my personal gallery and instantly fell in love with the original print of Somethin’s Cookin’ 1. After staring at the image for a long while and asking a lot of questions about the piece, they said they wanted to purchase the original but would first have to run home to assure that the piece would fit an area of their home in which they wanted it to hang. In the art world, if a client leaves while saying they will return to purchase a piece of art, that usually means they will not be back. And, that’s what I figured. Well, lo and behold, they were back within 30 minutes with money in hand. Elated that I had sold another original, I asked where they planned for it to hang, and they explained that it would fit perfectly above their kitchen sink. I asked them to send me a picture of the photo hanging in their home, though weeks would go by without contact from the couple. And then one day, as I checked my email, a message from the couple had arrived with a picture of the original hanging over their kitchen sink. The message read, “My son never complains about doing dishes anymore. Thank you for making that possible.” This story is one of my favorite examples of how the power of art can create harmony in a home.
